Local Architect Wins First Labine Award

Holm Bestowed Honor For Devotion To Classicism
By ERIN MAGUIRE, For The Bulletin
Sunday, October 25, 2009

Alvin Holm, of Alvin Holm A.I.A. Architects on Samson Street, was given the first Clem Labine Award for his pioneering work in Classicism at the Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference in Baltimore on Oct. 22. For more than 33 years, Mr. Holm has advocated Classicism through education and design, preserving and promoting what he calls “progressive tradition.” Philadelphia’s cityscape and other locales worldwide have benefited from Mr. Holm’s vision, but the architect is most proud of his work in education – teaching his students the way of Classicism to forward the tradition.

The Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference is the nation’s largest forum for Classical architects and enthusiasts to learn and share ideas about restoring and building in the traditional style. It is named for one of Mr. Labine’s two magazines, Traditional Building, the precursor of which was Old House Journal; the other is Period Homes.
