NEWINGTON-CROPSEY CULTURAL STUDIES CENTER EIGHTH ANNUAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS

The Newington-Cropsey Foundation Cultural Studies Center Award for Excellence in the Arts in presented annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the arts and society. In presenting this award, we recognize artists and scholars whose work furthers our understanding of how the arts inspire personal growth, responsibility and a sense of civic participation. We especially honor those who seek to recover and maintain the vital links between the canonical masterpieces of the past and contemporary artistic practice. The award, a bronze statuette created by Barbara Newington, depicts the Archangel Michael, an ecumenical symbol of heroic virtue and light.

Dedicated to the principle that the arts have a profound effect on society at large, the Newington-Cropsey Cultural Studies Center was established by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation in 1990. The center, under the guidance of founding director James F. Cooper, provides a forum for American art and culture, offering lectures, symposia and events such as this awards presentation. The Center publishes American Arts Quarterly and books related to American arts and culture.
